Protein Misfolding Diseases and Application of Bioinformatics Techniques

Abstract
Protein misfolding and aggregation form amyloid fibrils and have been associated with various diseases, such as prion diseases, Alzheimer"s disease, Parkinson"s disease and Huntington"s disease. Amino acid sequences of amyloid?forming proteins are different among diseases but they occur by similar processes. Thus, the analysis of common mechanism of protein aggregation is important to understand the nature of the diseases. Sequences and structure data of misfolding protein have been massively accumulated by experimentalists and are available in various databases. Prediction algorithms of ¥â-structure and amyloid propensity have been developed by researchers specially in bioinformatics area. Through this study, we looked into protein aggregation mechanism and amyloidosis and Bioinformatics techniques on amyloidosis researches are also presented.
